Time Duration Calculator

In our universe, there are four dimensions: length, width, and height, plus time, which can be thought of as the fourth. One could contend that time is necessary to ensure that nothing occurs all at once.

What is Time?

It wouldn’t be very exciting to live in a universe where time didn’t exist. Cause and effect can be established thanks to the separation of events provided by time. Right, so now time is taken care of. Err, no. Honestly, no. Time’s exact nature and behavior are still up for debate among physicists and philosophers today.

The good news is that as long as the calculation is made twice in the same inertial frame of reference, the time duration calculator will work fine without knowing what time it is.

What is a time duration calculator?

The time duration calculator allows you to determine the amount of time between two times. The 12-hour and 24-hour time-of-day formats are supported, and it accepts either two elapsed or two clock timings.

The calculator handles periods that include midnight with accuracy. As an added bonus, this article demonstrates how to compute time duration by hand while making sure you fully comprehend the mathematics underlying the calculator.

How many hours?

Many people in Canada who have a job with set hours want to know how long their workday is. If you’re also interested in knowing how many hours you work, read on. If you work a 9 to 5 job, then you might be wondering how many hours are in a 9 to 5 day. The response is eight hours exactly.

For example, if you drop your kids off in the morning and also pick them up from school, you may be interested in seeing how much time they spend at school per day. How many hours are there between 8 am and 4 pm if you drop them off and pick them up from school at these times? The answer is eight (16-8 = 8).

How to calculate hours between times

Calculating the difference in hours and minutes between two specified times is straightforward with this online tool. You need to know the start and end of a time period to determine the hours and minutes that make up that period. As a Canadian, your browser’s locale settings determine what time zone the hours’ calculator uses.

Simply click the “Calculate Difference” button after choosing the beginning and end dates of the time frame you are interested in. The disparity is displayed here in both complete hours and minutes.

When entering an hour later in the day than the one you input, the time difference is computed as though the earlier hour is for today and the later hour is for tomorrow. For instance, if you enter 6 pm and 8 am in the calculator, it will determine how many hours, minutes, and seconds pass from 6 pm to 8 am tomorrow.

You can use this calculator to figure out how many hours are between two dates so that you can fill out time sheets. What is the length of time, for example, between 9:00 am and 5:30 pm (or 9:00 am and 17:30)? Entering the two times in any sequence and choosing “Calculate” is all that is required.

It will take 8 hours, 30 minutes, or 510 minutes. The interval between these times is eight whole hours. It also advocates deducting lunch breaks and other breaks from the overall amount of time between. Lunch breaks have further information about that.

How to calculate time manually

It may be difficult to compare two times’ lengths depending on how many minutes and seconds are included in each of the two Canadian periods. For example, the processes to determine how many hours and minutes there are between two selected times within the same day are as follows:

  1. First, ascertain the starting and ending times. In a perfect scenario, you would want to take the starting time out of the end time.
  2. If they aren’t already set up that way, convert the timings to 24-hour time. Both 12-hour and 24-hour times have the AM hours. To convert PM hours to 24-hour time, all you need to do is to add the given number by 12. For example, 1:00 pm would be written as 13:00 in 24-hour time.
  3. Decide whether the time’s minute count is greater: the one at the beginning of the one at the end.
  4. Whenever the final time has more minutes: As you would typically subtract, take the starting time and divide it by the finishing time, keeping the minutes and hours on the correct side of the colon (“:”) (minutes are on the right and hours are on the left).
  5. The hour and minute components should be handled individually if the beginning time includes a higher number of minutes. To calculate the finishing time, add the number of minutes by 60 and the hourly component by 1 hour.
  6. Subtract the hours and minutes, being sure to place the result on the correct side of the colon (:), with the hours on the left.

How to calculate time duration in excel

The Excel sum time formula uses the standard SUM function, and the solution involves adding the appropriate time format to the output.

Let’s say you wish to include the project completion times shown in column B. Simple SUM formulas, like the one below, yield results in the standard format of hh:mm: ss. =SUM (B2:B4)

An Excel SUM formula for counting times

In certain circumstances, the default time format is perfect, but there are instances when you may need more, such as the ability to display the whole amount of time in minutes and seconds or simply seconds. The good news is that you just need to apply a custom time format to the cell containing the SUM formula; no further computations are needed.

To enter the Format Cells dialog box, right-click the cell and choose Format Cells from the context menu, or press Ctrl + 1. Choose Custom from the Category list, then choose one of the time formats listed below in the Type box:

  • To show the entire amount of time in minutes and seconds: [m]: ss
  • For total time to be shown in seconds: [ss]

How do you calculate time duration?

Determine the Start Time and End Time in:

Step 1: Pick a Start and End

For e.g.:

Time of Start: 9:45 am Time of End: 1:25 pm.

Step 2: Convert to a 24-hour clock.

If the times are given in 12-hour time, convert them to 24-hour time.

In the morning, 12-hour clock time corresponds to 24-hour clock time. To convert the 12-hour clock time in the morning to 24-hour clock time, we must add 12 hours. The one exception is that if it’s 12 o’clock at noon, it also remains 12 in the 24-hour clock.

Start Time: 9:45 am (in 24-hour clock).

End Time (1+12 = 13 = 13 25 hrs. in a 24-hour clock)

Step 3: Take away the minutes

If the difference in minutes between the start and end times is larger than one, then subtract as usual to obtain the duration in minutes.

If the number of minutes at the end of the hour is less than the number of minutes, in the beginning, add 60 to the end of the hour and subtract one. After that, start by taking away minutes from the commencement time.

In this instance:

Minutes until End = 25

Beginning Minutes = 45

We convert end time minutes to 25 + 60 = 85 since end time minutes are fewer than start time minutes (remember to subtract 1 from hour time, making it 13 – 1 = 12).

Duration in minutes = 85 – 45 = 40

Step 4: Deduct the hours.

Hours Until End = 12. (Since we already lent it for 60 minutes, it was lowered by 1)

Hours at Start = 9.

Duration in hours is 12 – 9 = 3.

In light of this, the time between 9:45 am and 1:25 pm is 3 hours and 40 minutes.

FAQs about our Time Duration Calculator

How to calculate time duration?

If we know the beginning and end times of the activity, we can determine how long it will last. The difference between the start time and finish time, for instance, is how long the morning assembly lasts in a school in Canada if it starts at 8:00 and ends at 8:25.

8:25 – 8:00 = 25 minutes

Therefore, we can determine the activity’s completion time if we know its beginning and length.

How to calculate the duration of time?

If you need to define a field for the calculating duration, for instance, to compute the length of a room reservation in a custom record made to manage information about room rentals, follow these steps:

1) For the Start Time, create a Count Field with the name Count1 and select “Display as Time of Day” from the drop-down menu.

2) Make a second Count Field (say, Count2) for the End time and select “Display as Time of Day” from the drop-down menu.”

3) Add a third Count field for the time frame (e.g., Count 3). Mark “Display as Duration” for this field as checked.” Enter the formula for the duration in the “Formula or Checkbox Choices” field when defining this field. As follows is the count field:

(Count2-Count1)/1000

This will determine the time in hours.
