Getting your driver’s license is always an exciting experience, no matter your age. Getting your full G license requires you to complete a few steps first.
Before you get your G2 license, you must get your G1 license, for instance. But is getting your G1 license hard? Is there any way to practice?
How will you know what information will be covered on your G1 test? Luckily, you can take a G1 practice test online. We’ll tell you everything you need to know about the G1 test and how to take a G1 practice test in this article.
Before you take your G1 Practice test, you should know more about the G1 test itself. The G1 test is the test you’re required to pass in order to obtain your G1 license.
It’s a written test in Ontario, and it covers various traffic laws and traffic signs you’ll need to know in order to drive safely. You have to take three tests altogether to obtain your full G license, and the G1 is the first of these tests.
Luckily for many people, it’s the only written test you’re required to pass, and the other two are road tests taken in the vehicle.
So basically, the G1 test is the first step you’ll take to get your license.
There are a few requirements you must meet before you can obtain your G1 license. Here are the requirements you must fulfill:
When you go to the Drive test center you’ll need to have your identification documents with you that display things like your name, date of birth and signature.
Once you meet all of these requirements, you’ll be awarded a G1 license. As a G1 license holder, you’re considered a new driver and you’ll have to abide by certain restrictions.
An important thing to know before you choose a G1 practice test and take your G1 test is how many question are on the test.
The official G1 test includes 40 questions, which are multiple choice, and you’re given between 20 and 30 minutes to complete it. There are two different sections of the test:
You’ll need to memorize and know 70 different traffic signals and lights because they’re all covered during the first part of the G1 test.
Your knowledge of traffic laws will be tested during the second half of the test. You’ll need to memorize 90 different Ontario driving rules for the test.
To get a passing score, you’ll need to answer 16 questions correctly on both of the exam sections and achieve a total score of 80%. So, it’s pretty obvious that a G1 practice test can massively help!
You’ll find all of the information necessary to pass the G1 written exam in your Driver’s Handbook of Ontario.
Here’s a bit more information on the G1 test:
You’re allowed 4 mistakes per section, for a total of 8 mistakes. So, with only 8 mistakes allowed for a passing grade, taking a G1 practice test can be incredibly beneficial!
The information in the driver’s handbook is used to create the questions on the G1 test. So to properly prepare for the G1 test, you should do everything you can to learn everything in the driver’s handbook.
Read and re-read the handbook front to back multiple times. You shouldn’t stop studying until you’re satisfied that you understand all of the laws, rules and signs.
You should take a G1 practice test to find out how prepared you are for the G1 test and just how much information you’ve retained.
Before you take a G1 practice test, and definitely before you take the G1 test, you need to study the G1 Handbook, which is the source material for the test.
It’s literally the only way you can learn everything you need for the test and get comfortable with all of the information- even if you do take a G1 practice test.
A lot of people feel overwhelmed by the amount of laws and signs they need to learn, but the thing is that the test also helps you get more comfortable with them. That’s right, it’s not JUST about quizzing you!
Here are some of the places you can pick up a G1 Handbook:
It’s worth noting that the official handbook will cost you $16, no matter where you pick it up.
Say you’ve taken your G1 practice test multiple times and re-read your handbook so many times that you can quote it all from front to back.
You feel completely comfortable with all of the laws and signs. So, what else do you need to know about booking the G1 test?
It’s perfectly allowed for you to make the appointment on the day of the test or the day before. You don’t have to schedule it very far in advance. You need to show up for your test early, and you should anticipate adequate time to take the test.
Depending on how populated the location is, you may have to wait in line to take your test, so it’s worth planning for that, too. You’ll need to take an eye exam, provide the appropriate identification and pay fees for the G1 test, as well, all of which you should plan for.
Even though the test itself may only take you 20-30 minutes to complete, it’s likely that the whole process will take you an hour or more.
After taking your G1 practice test and getting comfortable with the course material, it’s important to know where you can take the G1 test. That is the end goal, right? Where you should take your G1 test is dependent on where you live.
When it comes to G1 test booking, choose a DriveTest Centre that’s closest to you. You aren’t required to make an appointment to take your G1 test, but it’s a good idea to show up early if you’re going to walk in.
Your G1 practice test won’t cost you anything, but there’s a fee for the official G1 test. It costs $159.75 for your G1 test. Included in this fee is costs associated with your G1 license and G1 driving test, so you won’t have to pay extra for that once you pass your test.
This is sort of like when you pay for your G2 license, it covers the cost of your written test as well as your driving test.
You don’t need to bring anything with you when you take your G1 practice test, but when you show up for your official G1 test, you’ll need to be prepared.
You’ll need to bring your identification with you, as well as the following:
Additional documentation may be requested if the documents you provide don’t adequately provide the information necessary to prove your identity. (Say, it leaves out something like your new married name.) You can use a marriage certificate or health card to meet the signature requirement.
The best way you can study for the G1 test is to read the handbook and take steps to retain the information in it. After you’re pretty sure you’ve learned the signs and regulations, you can take a G1 practice test to find out how prepared you are for the test.
A G1 practice test likely won’t ask you the exact same questions that you’ll encounter on the G1 test, but it will give you a good idea of what to expect. Here are some tips on how to properly prepare for your official G1 test:
Set aside plenty of time to read the handbook and to learn the information in it. The written test may not seem important, but it’s designed to ensure that you understand the regulations to be a safe driver.
Learning the signs, lights and driving laws is the first step in a whole process designed to teach you how to drive properly. If you don’t understand something that you read in the handbook, you should either contact the driving office, or an experienced driver to ask about it.
The old adage says that “Practice makes perfect”, and while that may not be true in some cases, it definitely can’t hurt to practice as much as possible.
Taking a G1 practice test will build up your confidence so that you’ll be able to take easily take the G1 test. Ideally, you should take the G1 practice test several times before you take the official G1 test.
Of course study and practice are the most important steps to preparing for your test, but getting enough sleep is critical, too. Read your handbook one last time and then go to bed a bit early so that you fit in a good night’s sleep.
You’ll feel more alert and prepared this way, rather than feeling groggy and just generally bad. And because you’re more alert, you’ll likely be able to answer the questions more quickly and accurately.
It’s finally test day, and you’re so excited that you want to finish the test as quickly as you can and get your grade. Stop, and breathe.
The last thing you want to do is rush through the test and answer the questions incorrectly in your haste. Instead, pace yourself and answer the questions carefully.
If you’ve never been to the test centre before, you should take a day and practice going to find out how long it should take, as well. Set your alarm so that you’ll be ready and present at the centre at least 30 minutes before your test.
The questions are designed to be a little tricky to make sure you’re paying attention. This is another reason you should take your time and read the questions carefully. Because of the tricky nature of some questions, it’s easy to get one wrong in your haste if you aren’t paying attention.
If you’re not 100% sure about an answer, skip it and then come back to it later so that you can carefully consider it after you’ve finished the rest of the test.
Okay, so the burning question on everyone’s mind is: “Where can I find a good G1 practice test?”. Here’s a handy list of G1 practice tests that you can use while preparing for your G1 test.
Happy studying, and good luck!
